What can I expect from an appointment?
Prior to the appointment
I am happy to have a chat on the telephone to discuss your nutrition and dietetic needs prior to making an appointment. This helps you to know if I am able to meet your expectations.
By making an appointment, I shall undertake to write to your GP after the consultation, informing him, or her, of your dietary treatment. A copy of the letter will be sent to you for information.
Prior to the appointment, it is a good idea to keep a food and fluid intake diary for a minimum of three days. This should include one day at the weekend, when people often eat differently. Bringing this diary together with a list of medication and any other supplements that you are taking will be useful to me.

At the appointment
The consultation consists of three parts and will take up to an hour:
History and background of your health issue:
- For how long has the current issue been a concern and your views on it.
- Current symptoms, if any.
- Any recent changes to diet that you have tried.
- What has worked for you in the past if relevant.
- Current medication.
Assessment.
- Current scenario: including lifestyle issues that impact on diet (eg. working and eating away from home; no time for meal preparation etc.)
- Your food diary would be examined, clarifying portion sizes and cooking methods in detail, leading to an overview of your nutrition and health issues.
Plan - exploring options for change, setting goals and developing a personal action plan.
- Dietary changes and the reasons for them would be discussed, negotiated and agreed, based on the current evidence of effectiveness.
- Counselling skills and behavioural change techniques can be used where necessary to help you find coping methods to change your diet and lifestyle.
- You would be provided with written information highlighting the changes that had been agreed.
- Any questions regarding diet, nutrition and lifestyle would be answered.
- Follow up would be arranged if required.
After the appointment
I shall contact you by telephone or email after one week and then at one month should you have any queries following the appointment. You are also free to contact me should questions arise during this period.
