Background
I qualified as a dietitian at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen in 1979 and am registered on the Health Professions Council. I am passionate
about the role of food in relation to health. Because of this, I enjoy empowering people by interpreting the scientific evidence of nutrition in health and disease into practical terms of food and what it means for people on a day to day basis. For those who find it more challenging to achieve dietary change, I can use motivational interviewing and behaviour change techniques to support them.
One of the main reasons that I have decided to branch out into private practice is that I believe dietitians need to be more accessible to people than at present within the NHS where a referral is often required or there may be limitations on the service. For this reason, I am happy for people to refer themselves without a medical referral. For people in this situation, I am happy to have a chat over the phone about your specific health needs prior to making an appointment to ensure that I am able to provide you with what you want.
I also feel that I can provide a timely service in private practice by seeing people for up to one hour at the first appointment. This allows time for an in-depth discussion on your current lifestyle, medical and medication history, dietary regimens relevant to your condition and how they can be applied individually to you, as well as time for answering questions that you may have.
I have worked abroad and in various posts for the NHS for 25 years, most recently in the dietary management of people after strokes both in Darent Valley Hospital and the community, where I work as a Senior Dietitian (including nutrition and dietary aspects of swallowing disorders and diet after stroke). Within this role I represent the British Dietetic Association on the Royal College of Physicians, Intercollegiate Working Party for Stroke producing national clinical guidelines on stroke management. At the same time I have continued to work in other aspects of dietetics by undertaking dietetic clinics, supporting people with raised lipid (cholesterol) levels, irritable bowel syndrome and weight management (both weight gain and weight loss) difficulties. I have also produced written material for patient information in the areas of weight management and raised lipid (cholesterol) levels.
Lecturing and Training: I have also been involved in the training of a wide range of health professionals in areas of nutrition and dietetics, undertaken presentations at national conferences and have been lecturing on the modular Stroke Course at the University of Ulster for three years.
Research: I have been the lead on a number of projects evaluating dietetic practice that have been published in professional journals.
